This holiday was started after the start of Russian aggression in 2014 by decree of then-President Petro Poroshenko under the name “Defender of Ukraine Day.”
In 2021, the holiday was renamed “Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine” to establish gender equality.
Initially, the holiday fell on October 14 – the day of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, due to the reform of the church calendar in Ukraine, the dates of many religious holidays have shifted by two weeks.
In this regard, on July 14, the Verkhovna Rada supported the presidential bill, which provided for moving the date of the holiday to October 1. On July 28, current President Vladimir Zelensky signed this bill and the corresponding decree.
Today at 9.00 in Ukraine there will be a large-scale minute of silence in memory of all fallen soldiers.
9:00. Sunday. October 1st. Central square and streets of Ukrainian cities. A moment of respect. A minute of silence. But the eternity of memory of our fallen defenders and protectors,” Zelensky recently wrote on his Facebook page.
