The American leader made the statement after the US Congress passed temporary government funding without money for Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden signed the interim budget draft approved by both houses of Congress, but stressed that Ukraine should not be left without help. In a statement released on the White House website, Biden underscored the unacceptable situation.
“While the Speaker and the majority of Congress have been steadfast in their support for Ukraine, there is no new funding in this agreement to continue that support. Under no circumstances can we allow American support for Ukraine to be disrupted ,” Biden said.
He also added that he hopes this situation can be rectified.
“I fully expect the Speaker to keep his commitment to the people of Ukraine and provide the support needed to help Ukraine at this critical moment,” the US President said.
He recalled that a few months ago he reached a budget agreement with Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avoid a crisis. But within weeks, hard-line House Republicans tried to back out of the deal, demanding drastic cuts that would hurt millions of Americans.
Let’s remember that on Saturday, a few hours before the shutdown, the US Senate supported a temporary budget, which helped to avoid a crisis. As reported, the short-term funding bill includes disaster relief and an extension of the federal flood insurance program, but not aid to Ukraine. The White House said a bill to support Ukraine would be submitted to Congress separately.
