Armenians want to leave the region because they don’t want to live in Azerbaijan and fear ethnic cleansing.
About 100,000 people left the formerly self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia. This was announced on Friday, September 29, by the press secretary of the head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Armenia Nazeli Baghdasaryan, News.am reports.
“At 20.00 on September 29, approximately 98-625 people reached Armenia,” he said.
The official calls these people forcibly removed.
According to him, 20,892 vehicles crossed the Hakari bridge in the Lachin corridor, which connects Armenia with the former Karabakh.
In turn, Reuters reported that 120,000 Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh are seeking to leave the region because they do not intend to live in Azerbaijan and fear ethnic cleansing.
Let’s recall that on September 19, Azerbaijan announced the holding of “anti-terrorism measures” in Karabakh to “restore constitutional order.” On the same day, Baku announced the conditions for the end of the operation, including the surrender and disarmament of forces in the region. On September 20, Nagorno-Karabakh “authorities” accepted a ceasefire proposal.
Azerbaijan announced the restoration of sovereignty in Nagorno-Karabakh, and its residents, mainly ethnic Armenians, began to leave the region. The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) will cease to exist on January 1, 2024.
