The teenager is in custody and is assisting officers with the investigation, police said. Police suspect it was a deliberate act of vandalism. The police, as well as the park rangers who arrived at the felled maple tree, believe that “the tree was skillfully cut with a chainsaw by a man who knew what he was doing.”
The ancient maple tree grew in the town of Sycamore Gap and became famous after the release of the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman. Costner played Robin Hood, and Alan Rickman played the sheriff of Nottingham.
Police spokesman Kevin Waring called the devastated tree a “world famous landmark.” According to him, this loss resonated with grief and anger in the hearts of many people. A local resident said it was like “stealing joy.”
A huge white maple (sycamore) grew for several centuries in a small hollow “Sycamore Gap” (literally the name translates as “sycamore hollow” – this is how white maples are called in England). The ravine crosses a monument from the Roman period in the history of the British Isles – Hadrian’s Wall or Wall.
Memorial stones with inscriptions were left at the tree, the ashes of loved ones were scattered, proposals were made, and family picnics were held. According to the mayor of the three counties north of the Tyne, James Driscoll, “it was part of our collective soul.”
