Testifying in a Swiss court, Yuri Garavsky several times contradicted his initial statements and blamed “bad translation.”
A Swiss court acquitted former employee of the Belarusian special rapid reaction unit Yuri Garavsky, who was accused of involvement in the kidnapping and murder of three oppositionists in Belarus in the late 1990s. The BBC writes about it.
We are talking about the disappearance of the former Minister of Internal Affairs Yuri Zakharenko, opposition politician Viktor Gonchar and his friend, famous businessman Anatoly Krasovsky.
It was reported that the case was opened right after Garavsky appeared to journalists in 2019 and said that he was involved in the disappearance of Belarusian oppositionists.
Garavsky recounted how his special group in Minsk kidnapped three oppositionists right off the streets, took them out of the city, where they were shot twice in the back.
While giving evidence, Garavski several times contradicted his initial statements and blamed “bad translation”.
In the end, the judge found him not guilty of the enforced disappearance of the aforementioned people.
The judge suggested that Garavsky may have been a member of the SOBR special forces unit in Belarus, but his role in the abduction remains unclear. In addition, the judge believed that Garavsky could be part of his testimony.
