Canada’s Prime Minister emphasized that “Canada is deeply sympathetic” to President Vladimir Zelensky, who then visited Ottawa and applauded Gunka.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on behalf of the state, apologized for inviting a veteran of the SS Galicia division to parliament during a speech by Vladimir Zelensky. The CBC reported this on Wednesday, September 27.
In a statement to reporters, Trudeau said he and everyone present in the Canadian Parliament were “deeply sorry to stand and applaud” 98-year-old SS Galician veteran Yaroslav Gunka.
“This is a terrible insult to the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holocaust,” he said, adding that honoring Gunka was “deeply, deeply painful” for Jews, Poles, Roma, communities of LGBT and other groups exterminated by the Nazi regime during the years of World War II.
The Canadian Prime Minister also emphasized that “Canada is very sympathetic” to President Vladimir Zelensky, who then visited Ottawa and applauded Gunka.
The previous day, the speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Anthony Rota, resigned, inviting the veteran of the SS Galician division to the parliament and introducing him as a veteran of the Second World War who fought against the Russians.
