The jailed officials were accused of mistakes and mismanagement that led to the dam collapse disaster.
In Libya, eight officials have been detained in an investigation into the collapse of a dam that killed thousands of people during a flood. Deutsche Welle writes about it.
According to aid agencies, the death toll ranges from 4,000 to 11,000.
The jailed officials are accused of mistakes and mismanagement that led to the disaster.
The dams in Libya were reportedly built by a company from the former Yugoslavia in the 1970s, and in 2007 a Turkish firm was contracted to maintain two of the dams.
A 2021 report by the government’s audit agency said the two dams were not properly maintained, despite spending more than $2 million (€1.88 million) for the purpose in 2012 and 2013.
Experts across the country have repeatedly sounded the alarm, including last year, about the need for dam maintenance.
Let’s remember that on September 10, the east of Libya was engulfed by a storm, which brought strong winds and heavy downpours with storms to the cities located on the Mediterranean coast. The city of Derna was the worst affected, where two dams were destroyed. The very destruction of the dams near Derna is the main cause of many casualties in this region.
