Brown is a former fighter pilot, and American media writes that his experience commanding troops in the Pacific region will be useful amid tensions with China.
Brown will be the second African American to lead the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following Colin Powell, appointed to the post by George W. Bush 20 years ago.
The White House stated that General Brown played an important role in providing military assistance to Ukraine.
The term of office of the current head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, ends at the end of this month.
