The use of a lowercase letter for the name of the aggressor country in unofficial texts is acceptable and meets the requirements of Ukrainian language standards.
Writing the words “Russia” and “Moscow” with a small letter in unofficial texts will not be considered a mistake in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the National Commission for State Language Standards.
“Writing the names “Russian Federation”, “Russia”, “Moscow”, “Moscovia”, “Moscow Kingdom”, “Russian Empire”, “State Duma of the Russian Federation” and the like with lowercase letters is may not qualify as a deviation from the standards of the Ukrainian language in texts of an unofficial nature,” the statement said.
The National Commission discussed this issue taking into account official letters from the Institute of Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Linguistics named after AA Potebnya of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine at the request of the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister for the Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Irina Vereshchuk.
Let’s remember that earlier the Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lesnoy said that the name of the aggressor country in official documents should be written in capital letters. When the head of the Ministry of Education and Science was asked if it was possible for children to write the name of Russia with a small letter, he replied that “just for this.”
