Germany opposed Vladimir Zelensky’s proposal to exclude the Russian Federation from the UN Security Council. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock called the Ukrainian president’s proposals naive and said that not all Kyiv’s initiatives meet the interests of Germany and other countries.

We do not support this, and I again explained this to my Ukrainian interlocutors,” Baerbock was quoted as saying by the German publication Zeit, citing Maischberger’s talk show broadcast on the ARD channel.
At the same time, the minister criticized Russia for abusing its veto power in the UN Security Council.
This is why reform is more important than ever. But you must be realistic, this will not come tomorrow,” added the German Foreign Minister.
The day before, Zelensky spoke at a meeting of the UN Security Council: he criticized the institution and called for its reform.
The President asked to admit that the organization is at an impasse regarding aggressions.
A veto in the hands of an aggressor is what has driven the UN into a dead end. No matter who you are, the existing UN system still makes you less than the veto power, which only a few have and is used by one – Russia – to the detriment of all other UN members. The UN General Assembly should be given a real opportunity to override a veto. This is the first necessary step. Subject to the entry of a two-thirds vote, which will reflect the freedom of nations from Asia, and from Africa, and from Europe, and from the Americas, and from the Pacific region, a global supermajority veto must be effectively overridden, and such a General Assembly resolution must be mandatory for implementation by all member states,” Zelensky said at the UN.
His other proposal is accountability of the UN Security Council and increased representation of nations on the Security Council. At the same time, any participation of any state member of the Security Council must be suspended for the time when such a state, in violation of the UN Charter, commits aggression against another nation.
Ukraine’s third step is that the application of preventive sanctions should be submitted to the UN Security Council automatically when any member of the General Assembly declares a threat of aggression.
Germany in the Security Council
Poland is against a permanent seat in the UN Security Council for Germany. According to Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, Zelensky’s proposal is “quite strange” and a “big disappointment” from Poland’s point of view.
The Polish minister insists that Germany must take responsibility for the destruction caused during the Second World War.
The demand for war reparations that we made to Germany still stands, he added.
