The Parliament of Albania has elected the former Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Bayram Begay, as the new president of the country. This was reported by the Parliamentary press service on Saturday, June 4th.

In the fourth round of voting, of the 103 deputies who attended, Begay’s candidacy was supported by 78, four opposed, and one abstained. There are 140 representatives in the Albanian Parliament.
Prior to the vote, the current president of Albania, Ilir Meta, released Begay from his position as chief of the General Staff by decree and removed him from active service in the armed forces. The law took effect immediately.
As head of state, Begay will be the supreme commander of the armed forces. In addition, he will have the right to nominate three of the nine members of the country’s constitutional court.
Begay’s candidacy for the presidency was presented by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. Begay will take office on July 24, when the current president’s five -year term ends.
