CNN reports that the two counts stem from the fact that in 2018, the US President’s son lied about not using drugs when buying a gun. The third count alleges that Hunter Biden possessed a firearm while using drugs. CNN clarifies that both are federal crimes.
The New York Times writes that if convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of $750,000.
The Hunter Binden investigation began in 2018. In the summer of 2023, the president’s son entered into an agreement with the US Department of Justice, under which he must plead guilty to two tax offenses committed in 2017-2018. Instead, Hunter should have been cleared of the weapons charges within two years. However, the court did not approve the agreement on July 26, and the special prosecutor in the case, David Weiss, later said that negotiations on this issue had reached an impasse and were terminated.
Hunter was a member of the board of directors of the controversial Ukrainian gas production company Burisma. In 2019, Trump accused Joe Biden of using his position to put pressure on the Ukrainian side not to investigate the Burisma case.
