The first president of Moldova, Mircea Snegur, died at the age of 83. In recent years he had been seriously ill. Radio Liberty’s Moldovan service reported this on Thursday, September 14.

News of the death was first spread on social networks by people who knew the former president closely, particularly Constantin Tampiza, former Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova (1991–1992).

Tampiza writes that Snegur died on the night of September 13.

The country’s President Maia Sandu ordered the burial of the first head of state with state honors and declared September 16 a day of national mourning.

“Gospodar Snegur lived in historical times and played an important role in promoting Moldova’s freedom, independence and sovereignty. Mircea Snegur will remain in our memory as the man who stood at the cradle of Moldova’s independence,” he said.
