This was announced by government representative in the Verkhovna Rada Taras Melnichuk.
From now on, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in agreement with the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, must form search groups for missing persons. The activities of the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing in Special Circumstances will be ensured by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Missing people under special circumstances are considered to be those who disappeared in connection with an armed conflict, military operations, temporary occupation of a part of the territory of Ukraine, natural or man-made emergencies.
In May 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that about 24 thousand Ukrainians were considered missing in special circumstances.
