The 55-member African Union will be given the same status as the European Union, sources said.
The G20 countries have agreed to grant the African Union permanent membership status. It will be announced at the G20 summit in India over the weekend, Bloomberg reported citing sources on Thursday, September 7.
It is said that such an initiative would give the African Union, which has 55 members and is currently an “invited international organization”, the same status that the European Union currently enjoys.
“Part of this is a desire to give African countries a stronger voice on global issues such as climate change and the emerging debt market, especially as the markets of the so-called Global South are beginning to perform of an increasingly prominent role in the global arena,” the agency wrote.
It was noted that Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, who hosted the G20 summit, announced the priority of granting full membership to the African Union. Also, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgio Meloni, was one of those who supported the membership of this organization in the G20 at the last meeting of the G7, which was held in Japan in mid-May.
The media earlier reported that the EU plans to take advantage of the absence of the leaders of China and Russia at the G20 summit in India to intensify its work with countries in the Global South.
As you know, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin will not come to the G20 summit because the International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for his arrest for kidnapping children in Ukraine. In this regard, Chinese leader Xi Jinping decided to ignore the G20 summit.
