This was announced on September 3 by the speaker of the Air Force Yuri Ignat in a telethon.
A year ago, we did not have Western medium-range weapons at all. We only had the first NASAMS and IRIS in the fall – and in very limited quantities. If you look today, we have such a variety of air defense systems that is not available all over the world. As our anti-aircraft gunners joke, it’s a kind of “vinaigrette”. This is NASAMS, and IRIS, and Patriot, and SAMP-T. And the air defense of the Ground Forces is working quite well: these are Gepard, and Crotale, and Avenger. And a lot more, it’s hard to list them all from memory. All this air defense is working today and complements the Soviet systems that are still working quite effectively with us: these are the S-300, and the Buk-M1 and S-125, which are in service with the Air Force. All this vinaigrette (or hodgepodge) works and brings results. The only question is that this is not enough, the country is large and it is necessary to organize air defense locally, protecting objects, cities and state strategic objects,” Ignat said.
Earlier, a spokesman for the Air Force spoke about the intention of the United States to transfer AMRAAM missiles with a range of 160-180 km to Ukraine. They will hit Russian aircraft from a safe distance.
The Pentagon ordered the production of advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles AMRAAM from the American company Raytheon for Ukraine. They can cover a distance of 160-180 kilometers, which is more than enough to reach Russian aircraft without entering the enemy air defense zone, Ignat said.
He said that what is available in warehouses can be delivered to Ukraine, and this is the next batch of missiles for November 2024.
