Following the resignation of Frans Timmermans as Vice-President of the European Commission, the Dutch government, where he was appointed, will appoint a foreign minister.
The Netherlands is planning to appoint the current Dutch foreign minister, Wopke Goukstra, as its next European commissioner. On Thursday, August 24, POLITICO reports, citing sources familiar with the government’s intentions.
The Dutch government is expected to approve Gukstra’s candidacy for the position of European Commissioner at a meeting on Friday. Moreover, it has not yet been considered by the European Commission.
The publication suggests that the candidacy of Gukstra, who belongs to the same conservative European political group as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will cause controversy in Brussels.
Frans Timmermans, who previously held this post, is in charge of the EU’s climate policy, which conservatives have traditionally questioned.
In addition, according to the publication, there may also be conflicts due to Gukstra’s gender, since, according to Politico, they would prefer to see more women in the EC.
Earlier, the European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets, Mairead McGuinness, reported that the European Union could allocate 500 million euros for the production of 155 mm ammunition for further transfer to Ukraine.
