The information about the possibility of granting NATO membership to Ukraine in exchange for giving up part of the territories in favor of Russia is false. This was stated by the coordinator of strategic communications of the US National Security Council John Kirby during a briefing at the White House.
According to him, the position of the American authorities boils down to the fact that Ukraine is planned to be admitted to NATO in the future, and this was confirmed by the leadership of the Alliance member countries during the last summit in Vilnius.
At the Vilnius Summit, the Alliance supported the idea that a path to membership could be developed. The US is trying to help Kyiv find a path to Alliance membership and has repeatedly publicly stated that NATO is the future of Ukraine. Currently, the focus is on helping Ukraine fight Russian aggression and continue to reclaim territories that are wholly owned by Ukraine. They are making progress every day and we will continue to support them,” Kirby said.
Answering a reporter’s question about discussions about the exchange of Ukrainian territories for NATO membership, Kirby said: “Nothing like that. This is wrong”.
The day before, the head of the apparatus of the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jenssen, apologized for his statement: he said that it was a mistake, and the words were “part of a larger discussion.”
