The former French president believes that Ukraine should be a “bridge” between Europe and Russia.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012) said that Ukraine should not be a member of the EU, but should be “a bridge between Europe and Russia.” On Wednesday, August 15, he said in an interview with Le Figaro.
“First of all, it is necessary to agree on the vocation of Ukraine. Should it join the European Union? I think not. Ukraine is a link between the West and the East. It is necessary to remain so,” Sarkozy said.
He added that Europe is giving Kyiv “false promises that are not fulfilled”, promising to join the EU.
During the war, Sarkozy said it was unlikely that Ukraine would be able to return Crimea, although Russia’s occupation of the peninsula in 2014 was “a clear violation of international law.”
“But when it comes to this territory, which was Russian until 1954, and where the majority of the population has always felt like Russians, I think that any step back is illusory,” said Sarkozy.
Sarkozy expressed the need to find a “balanced solution” to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. In his opinion, the situation requires “work on compromises.”
Recall that in March 2021, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of corruption and influence peddling. Sarkozy will have to spend one year of this term in prison, with two more years suspended.
