The deployment of Russian mercenaries in Belarus is an element of Russia’s information-psychological game on the borders with NATO, believes Andrey Chernyak.
The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense does not yet have information that the “Wagnerites” may return to fight on the territory of Ukraine. However, in the near future there is no danger of an invasion of mercenaries from the territory of Belarus. This was stated by the representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense Andrey Chernyak in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine, published on Tuesday, August 15.
According to him, the Wagner group is currently not involved in direct hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.
“Will they return to the war against our state after an unsuccessful attempt at rebellion in Russia and losses, especially near Bakhmut? in the coming weeks, there is no threat of an invasion of “Wagnerites” from the territory of Belarus, ” he said. .
A representative of Ukrainian intelligence did not rule out that some covert recruitment of Wagner could continue.
“(Founder of PMC Wagner – ed.) Prigozhin said that he was going to return his army of mercenaries to African countries,” Chernyak recalled.
In his opinion, the brand of the so-called PMC Wagner could be used by some other Russian PMCs to recruit into their own paramilitary formations.
According to him, the Wagner factor is now actively used as an element of Russia’s information-psychological game on NATO’s borders – to maintain tension with European countries bordering Belarus, especially Poland. However, it does not pose “any serious threat to NATO states.”
If you try to test the strength of the Ukrainian border or attack the Suwalki corridor between Belarus and the Kaliningrad region, “such a group will be destroyed immediately,” Chernyak stressed.
In general, the purpose of such provocations is to force the enemy into impulsive, unconsidered actions, but this is useless, the intelligence officer said.
“In total, according to our estimates, 6,400 Wagnerites were transferred to the territory of Belarus. They are engaged in conducting military training for Belarusians in their training areas,” he said.
This activity of PMCs is not systematic, and therefore not the main one, added Chernyak.
“By the way, some of the mercenaries are gathering or even returning to Russian territory,” he concluded.
As you know, after the unsuccessful rebellion of PMC leader Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin, part of his militants came to Belarus. The “Wagnerites” are located in a tent city.
According to the Ukrainian border guards, there are more than 5,000 “Wagnerites” on the territory of Belarus.
