The special prosecutor in charge of the case obtained a search warrant for Trump’s account in January, but the social network delayed its execution.
A US court fined Twitter for delaying and obstructing the investigation into former President Donald Trump. This was stated in the decision of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Reuters reports on Wednesday, August 9.
The media said that the US special prosecutor, who is investigating the actions of Donald Trump, received a search warrant for the former president’s Twitter account in January, but the social network postponed its execution.
The US Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia upheld a federal judge’s decision to find Twitter’s actions in contempt. The social network was fined $350 million.
The decision said Twitter had raised First Amendment concerns about the non-disclosure order issued in connection with the warrant because the company wanted to inform Trump about it.
Note that Trump’s posts are public, but the company also keeps account information such as direct messages, draft tweets, location data, and the type of device they use to send private.
The warrant is related to an investigation into the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters while he was still president.
Recall that Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 3, came to the Washington District Court.
