It is important for President Biden to support the prosecution of Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, Carpenter said.
US President Joseph Biden ordered the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to hand over evidence of Russia’s war crimes. On Tuesday, August 8, US Permanent Representative to the OSCE Michael Carpenter said in an interview with Ukrinform.
“Yes, I can confirm – the President has decided that it is very important for us that there is the possibility of being held accountable for various war crimes and other atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine. And our strategy is to support all actors involved in the accountability process,” said the US Ambassador to the OSCE.
He emphasized that the United States supports the creation of an international court to consider the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
“The fact that we have supported the International Criminal Court obligates us to share information with it. I think President Biden has decided that it is very important that we do this and support the ICC not only with words, but also by providing factual information at our disposal,” Carpenter said.
At the same time, he did not specify the type of information that the United States sent to the ICC.
As you know, on March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of illegally deporting thousands of children from Ukraine. Also, a warrant was issued for children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova.
The Kremlin then hastened to declare that the Russian Federation does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC and that they consider its decision “insignificant”. At the same time, Putin decided not to go to the BRICS summit in South Africa, because he faced arrest there on a warrant issued.
