The war against Ukraine has weakened the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin more than imagined.
The recent rebellion of the owner of PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin showed the weakness and danger of Russia. Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy, wrote about this on Tuesday, July 4, in his blog.
In his opinion, the war against Ukraine has weakened the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin more than previously thought.
“Putin created a monster, and now that monster has bitten him. The fact that a group of state-funded mercenaries opened fire on a regular state army illustrates the extent of Putin’s pathology of Russia,” Borrell said.
He urged to closely monitor the events in Belarus, where Prigozhin’s militants should be transferred. At the same time, the diplomat emphasizes that Putin has received a blow to his authority, which will have consequences for the future.
“But here is another lesson learned from Russia’s ongoing war of aggression: Putin’s Russia is the biggest threat to European and global security, and its nuclear arsenal makes it not less, but more dangerous for the entire civilized world,” Borrell summed up.
Earlier, the former head of the CIA, David Petraeus, noted that Putin is more vulnerable now than at any time in two decades.
