Wallace said the alliance should consider “skipping” the Membership Action Plan for Ukraine. The United States says NATO members are close to a consensus on Ukraine’s entry into the alliance.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said NATO should consider ignoring the specific needs that need to be met on Ukraine’s path to joining the Alliance. He said this at a joint press conference with his Canadian counterpart in London, Sky News reports.
“I think we really need to think about abandoning the Membership Action Plan,” said Ben Wallace.
According to him, the direction of movement should be Ukraine’s advancement to NATO membership. At the same time, the minister acknowledged that all issues related to accession cannot be resolved quickly.
Wallace believes that it is likely that all problems related to Ukraine’s accession will be resolved by the time of the NATO summit in Lithuania next month.
In this regard, the US Ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, said that member countries are approaching a compromise on Ukraine’s aspirations for membership. This compromise may determine how Kyiv can join the Alliance.
Smith expressed confidence that Alliance members will agree on a text that goes beyond the 2008 Bucharest Declaration, which said Ukraine would join the alliance but did not specify when or how.
As reported, the Secretary General of NATO said that Ukraine’s membership in NATO will be discussed after the summit in Lithuania.
Recall that the Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal to the participants of the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will be held on July 11. The participants of the summit called to recognize the inability of Ukraine to pass the stage of the NATO Membership Action Plan and make of a strategic decision to invite Ukraine to NATO membership.
