The National Commission exceeded its powers and at the same time failed to fulfill its obligations, the minister believes.
The decision of the National Commission for State Language Standards to rename settlements, including Zaporozhye, should be cancelled. This was said by the Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lesnoy on Facebook on Wednesday, June 28.
“The annoying decision of the National Commission for State Language Standards to change the name of the settlements must be removed,” he wrote.
Lesnoy believes that the commission has exceeded its powers, because the issue of banning the propaganda of Russian imperial policy in Ukraine and the decolonization of toponymy is assigned by law to other bodies.
The minister explained that the duties of the commission are the development and publication of a list of settlements, whose names require mandatory coordination with the state language standards and recommendations for the harmonization of the names of such villages , town, city with state language standards. .
“It seems that the members of the commission approached the development of the recommendations formally. Is there a root “red” or “worm” in the name? Ok, change the name. But is there really a historical connection with the communists, no one has -study (and this, in fact, This is the work of this commission.) Therefore, now this decision must be canceled and a new one must be made by competent and authorized bodies,” said Lesnoy.
Recall that on June 27, the National Commission for State Language Standards published recommendations on changing more than 1.4 thousand names of villages, towns and cities in Ukraine. Among other things, the city of Zaporozhye is also included in the list.
The National Commission said they began considering the issue of renaming Zaporozhye after an appeal from the city’s residents.
State Language Protection Commissioner Taras Kremen called on the relevant minister to withdraw the scandalous decision.
