Russian General Sergei Surovikin, who previously commanded the Russian invasion forces in Ukraine, knew in advance that Wagner mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was planning a military mutiny.

The American authorities are trying to find out if Surovikin helped Prigozhin in the uprising. There are indications that other Russian generals could also support the idea of the owner of the PIK “Wagner” to forcefully change the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Without the support of Russian top officers, Prigozhin would hardly have started a rebellion. This was reported by The New York Times, citing US officials familiar with intelligence.
It is noted that now the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin must decide whether he believes in helping Serovikin Prigogine, and how to respond to it. Now Surovikin holds the position of deputy commander of Russian troops in Ukraine. In the United States, they believe that Surovikin can be removed from command if his involvement in the rebellion is proven.
After the start of the Wagner rebellion, Surovikin opposed and called on Russian troops in Ukraine to remain in their positions and not join the uprising.
One U.S. official said Surovikin’s video message showed he was uncomfortable condemning a former ally who shared his views on Russian military leadership.
It is noted that Washington is interested in undermining the authority of General Surovikin, as they consider him more competent and ruthless than other members of the command of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Recall that in January 2023, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, General Valery Gerasimov, became the commander of the occupying group of troops. He replaced Sergei Surovikin, who became his deputy.
