NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is likely to remain in office for another year, despite his repeated desire to hand over leadership to another person. Stoltenberg’s term of office has already been extended twice, for the second time in March last year, immediately after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country Russia.

About this writes the publication Euractiv.
NATO chief Stoltenberg was expected to step down in October 2014, but he could stay on for another year instead. The decision can be made on Wednesday 28 June.
None of Stoltenberg’s potential successors, like Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace or Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, have so far been able to gain the support of 31 NATO member states.
NATO diplomats note that Stoltenberg has proven his ability to manage the military-political bloc during crises.
It is dangerous to change the captain during a storm, one of the top NATO officials told Euractiv.
No appointment in the alliance takes place without prior political agreement among NATO members, especially from the quartet of largest allies – France, Germany, Britain and the United States.
Recall, on June 5, it was reported that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would convince US President Joe Biden to support the candidacy of Defense Secretary Ben Wallace for the post of NATO Secretary General. On June 17, Norwegian media reported that Biden would ask Stoltenberg to remain as NATO Secretary General.
On June 21, Wallace announced that he would not become the new NATO Secretary General, since the United States wanted to see Stoltenberg in this post.
