According to the official, whose name the channel does not disclose, Western countries feared that they could be seen as helping the Wagner PKK and would be seen as a threat to Russian sovereignty.
The message was: “Don’t roll the boat,” the channel quoted a source as saying.
He also said that the recommendation not to launch strikes on Russian territory was conveyed to the Ukrainian authorities at the level of the foreign minister, through deputies and through ambassadors.
The CNN source added that Kyiv was told that the situation with the insurgency “is an internal affair of Russia”, thus exposing public statements by representatives of the United States and other Western countries.
On the evening of June 23, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the owner of the Wagner PPK, accused the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of incompetence in the war in Ukraine and announced a march on Moscow. Part of the mercenaries entered Rostov-on-Don and occupied the air defense headquarters, another group of fighters went to Moscow.
Closer to the night of June 24, it became known that Alexander Lukashenko had held talks with Prigozhin, and the “march of justice” was stopped. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the owner of the Wagner PPK would go to Belarus.
US intelligence knew about the plans of the leader Wagner Prigozhin, including travel routes and key bases. However, intelligence was only shared with select allies, such as high-ranking British officials.
The secrecy surrounding this intelligence was the reason why some high-ranking European officials and even high-ranking officials in the US government were captured by an unexpected Prigozhin rebellion, CNN points out. Ukrainian officials were also not informed of this intelligence in advance due to fears of interception of the conversation.
