It is not only about changing purely Russian names, but also about bringing many names of villages, towns and cities into the line of Ukrainian spelling.
The National Commission for State Language Standards recommends changing more than 1,400 names of villages, towns and cities in Ukraine.
“In compliance with the law Condemning and Prohibiting the Propaganda of Russia’s Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy, the National Commission for State Language Standards has created a working group, which includes philologists and historians of higher education from all regions of Ukraine,” the commission said in a statement.
It is not only about changing purely Russian names, but also about bringing many names of villages, towns and cities into the line of Ukrainian spelling. For example, if a village called Pushkino is offered to choose a different name, then the village of Kovalevo is proposed to be called according to Ukrainian spelling standards: Kovalevoe.
