Earlier this week, US intelligence officials briefed Congressional leaders, known as the Gang of Eight, about the movement of the Wagner PKK and the buildup of equipment near Russia’s borders. Putin’s so-called chef was preparing for a riot, including by stockpiling weapons and ammunition. It is reported by CNN, citing sources.
U.S. intelligence believes that Prigogine’s claims of ammunition shortages were a deliberate deception. The main “Wagnerian” lied to lay the groundwork for a potential military challenge to the top leadership of the Russian army.
A source familiar with the intelligence said that “everything happened very quickly.”
And the Washington Post newspaper writes that American intelligence received signals about the uprising of the “Wagnerites” in mid-June. But at the same time, it was not of an exact nature, nor the timing of the preparation of the rebellion.
Recall that on June 23, the leader of the Wagner PPK, Yevgeny Prigogine, announced his campaign against Moscow under the control of Rostov, Voronezh, and even reached the Lipetsk region. There were clashes with the Russian army, but suddenly the rebellion ended. The Wagnerites began to return to their positions, and Prigogine himself fled to Belarus.
