Washington said they considered the confrontation real, as Prigozhin’s statements differed from his previous words.
US officials are closely monitoring the conflict between Wagner PIK leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Russian Defense Ministry, CNN reports.
In particular, President Joe Biden was briefed on developments in Russia, National Security Council spokesman Adam Hodge said.
“We are monitoring the situation and will consult with allies and partners on these developments,” Hodge said in a brief statement.
The media also cited the words of an unnamed official, who said that Prigozhin’s comments, in which he called for “an end to the military rule of the Russian Federation,” were something more than his usual rhetoric.
“Unlike some of Prigozhin’s initial statements about the mediocrity of the Russian Ministry of Defense, these comments do not appear to be the result of a Ukrainian military victory or tactical success,” the publication notes.
At the same time, Russian propaganda TV channels aired an emergency newscast in which Prigozhin’s statements were called “fake”. In the air, the positions of the FSB and the Ministry of Defense were repeated several times.
As reported, on Friday night, Prigozhin’s statements appeared on Telegram channels with accusations against the Russian Defense Ministry of a missile attack on the Wagner PMC camps. After this, Prigozhin announced that he would withdraw his forces from the front and led them to confront the leadership of the Russian Defense Ministry.
After that, security forces in the Russian Federation were reportedly alerted, and roadblocks were placed on the highway.
