This was announced on June 22 by the US Coast Guard, which was searching for an underwater vehicle that disappeared during a dive into the Titanic.
At the same time, OceanGate, which owned the bathyscaphe, said that they consider the people on board “missing.”
These people were true explorers who shared a special spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans, the statement said. Our hearts are with the five souls and every member of their families at this tragic time.
Bathyscaphe Titan, owned by OceanGate Expeditions, went on a two-hour mission last Sunday to the crash site of the famous liner, the wreckage of which lies at a depth of 3.8 km in the North Atlantic. Communication with the apparatus was lost an hour and 45 minutes after the dive, but the media became aware of the next day.
There are five people on board: OceanGate Expeditions founder Stockton Rush, French aquanaut and Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Narjolet, British billionaire and space tourist Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleiman. What happened to the bathyscaphe is still unknown.
The search is led by the US Coast Guard, since this part of the Atlantic Ocean is under US jurisdiction. Canada and France also take part in the operation.
On June 21, wreckage was discovered in the bathyscaphe search area, but experts could not unambiguously say whether they belonged to the Titan.
There may have been an explosion in the submersible. The ship disappeared on June 19, the tourists in it planned to inspect the wreckage of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean.
