Mining of Russia’s Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant poses an immediate threat of a nuclear accident at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
On Thursday, June 22, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced the imminent threat of a nuclear incident at the ZNPP and called on the international community, particularly the G7 countries and the European Union, to prevent a disaster. This was stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Mining and other forms of militarization of Russia’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are a direct threat of a nuclear incident at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” the document said.
It was also noted that, according to Ukrainian intelligence, “Russia is considering a scenario for committing a terrorist act in the temporarily occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.” Such a terrorist attack would have global consequences, the statement emphasizes.
The Foreign Ministry recalled that Russia, which occupied the ZNPP, grossly violated international law, as well as norms and standards of nuclear safety, including the seven basic principles of the IAEA on nuclear safety and security.
“We are waiting for a clear assessment of the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi about the criminal actions of Russia,” the Ukrainian agency stressed.
Russia, as a terrorist state, has violated all the basic principles of international nuclear safety law and most of its own treaty obligations, but has yet to face fair consequences for its crimes, which stressed in Kiev.
“We call on the international community, especially the G7 and the EU, to take urgent measures to prevent a nuclear disaster at the Zaporozhye NPP, including the introduction of enhanced restrictive measures against Russia’s nuclear industry and the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation,” the document said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized the need to recognize Russia as a terrorist state and ensure the inevitable political, economic and legal consequences for all the crimes and illegal actions it has committed.
Earlier, Zelensky said that the Presidential Office held a briefing for partner countries on the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. There are representatives of G7, G20 countries, representatives of international organizations.
