Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto said that official Budapest was not involved in the removal of 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war from Russia. According to him, the transfer of Ukrainian captives took place after “discussions between the church and religious organizations.” Siyarto assures that the dismissed Ukrainians are allegedly “free in their movement in Hungary, and if they want to get in touch with the Ukrainian authorities, they are free to do so.”
Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs claims that 11 captives were fired “after cooperation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Hungarian Charitable Service of the Order of Malta.” They allegedly left for Hungary of their own free will, since the majority had Hungarian citizenship, while the rest “received refugee status”.
Kovacs denies preventing Ukrainian diplomats from accessing the prisoners and says they are “free” in Hungary and can leave “at any time of their own free will.”
Recall, Kyiv believes that Hungary is holding Ukrainian prisoners of war in isolation, whom Russia handed over without the knowledge of Ukraine. Ukrainian diplomats cannot get access to them, the consul is also not allowed. Budapest does not provide any information, and the stories of relatives indicate that they are in captivity.
Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba believes that Ukrainians were taken from Russia to Hungary in the interests of the pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who can use them in political games.
