Some Western equipment units purchased by Ukraine have become non-functional, requiring repair or disassembly for spare parts.
Ukraine in 2022 paid more than $800 million to Western arms suppliers under contracts that remained fully or partially unfulfilled. The New York Times writes about this, citing documents from the Ukrainian government.
The publication notes that part of the Western military equipment was not delivered to Kyiv, and one is in such poor condition that it is only suitable for parsing for spare parts.
The interlocutors of the newspaper, who participated in the purchase of weapons, said that the missing weapons were partially delivered, in other cases the intermediaries returned the money. But a number of contracts at the beginning of spring 2023 were not fulfilled.
As examples, the NYT cited the delivery of 33 self-propelled howitzers donated to Ukraine by the Italian government. The howitzers were taken out of service several years ago, but Ukraine still requests them for overhaul and use. 13 howitzers were sent to the United States for repairs, but when they were returned, they turned out to be unfit for combat missions.
In addition, the US sent 29 Humvee military vans to Ukraine from a base in Kuwait. However, when the cars arrived in Poland, it turned out that the tires on 25 of them were rotten; it took almost a month to find replacement tires. The same American army unit is supposed to send M777 howitzers to Kyiv. But they needed serious repairs, and one of the howitzers was in such a condition that the artillerymen could die when fired upon. Before the APU received these guns, they were repaired twice.
Also, the 12 AS-90 self-propelled howitzers that the UK decided to send to Ukraine require “either repair or disassembly for spare parts,” according to documents from the British Ministry of Defense.
It will be remembered that last week the United States announced a new package of military aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
