The leaders of the countries of the African Union proposed 10 steps to achieve peace in Ukraine.
The President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa named the 10 main “components” of the position of the countries of the African Union on the Russian-Ukrainian war. He said this at a press conference in Kyiv after a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“The main component that we brought here is that this war must be settled, there must be peace through negotiations through diplomacy,” he said.
The South African leader called the need to reduce the conflict the next step. “Today, during our visit, we heard rocket strikes. Such activities do not work very well for the establishment of peace. Therefore, we are talking about the need for de-escalation on both sides, to find a way how peace will come. and how to resolve the situation,” said the politician.
Ramaphosa also stated that the sovereignty of states and the freedom of people must be respected in accordance with the UN Charter. Another part, he said, is the need for security guarantees for all countries.
The sixth part – Ukraine and Russia should ensure the export of grain and fertilizers. The South African leader said that “one of the reasons for coming here is that Africa is also experiencing the negative effects of this war. Our grain prices have increased, we have the same shortage of fertilizers, and their prices have increased .”
Ramaphos named humanitarian issues as the seventh key point – humanitarian support to victims of war, who are suffering. “We are for such humanitarian aid,” he stressed.
The eighth pillar, according to African leaders, is the mandatory exchange of prisoners, including the return of children.
The ninth part of the President of South Africa is called post-war reconstruction and assistance to victims of war.
Ramaphosa sees the tenth key element as follows: “During our discussions, President Zelensky said that we should continue, engage better with African countries.”
“We want this conflict to end. Its completion will benefit the whole world including the people of Africa,” the President of the Republic of South Africa stressed.
Recall that the heads of African countries visiting Ukraine, during today’s rocket attack on Kyiv, were hiding in a bomb shelter in one of the hotels. Later they met Zelensky. Tomorrow, African leaders will visit Russia, where they will hold talks with Putin.
