The Canadian Army Tank Brigade will join the 10-NATO multinational battle group led by Canada since 2017.
In the coming months, Canada will send a Canadian Army tank brigade to Latvia, consisting of 15 Leopard 2 tanks, along with support personnel and equipment. This was announced on Friday, June 16, by Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand, reports the press service of the Government of Canada.
The Minister specified that the arrival of tanks, personnel and equipment is expected in the fall of 2023. The full deployment, with approximately 130 personnel, is scheduled for the spring of 2024.
In addition, Canada will transfer more than 35 vehicles to Latvia, including two armored recovery vehicles, as well as various vehicles for maintenance, fuel supply, supply and military transport.
“The deployment of a Canadian Army tank squadron to Latvia demonstrates Canada’s continued commitment to the security of Latvia and the collective defense of NATO. As a founding member of NATO, Canada will continue to take concrete step to protect Alliance members,” the minister said.
We add that NATO countries have begun to strengthen their borders after the Russian Federation’s massive invasion of Ukraine.
Canada earlier announced a new military aid package.
Recall that Canada received a list of required military equipment from Ukraine.
