The book featured British musician Elton John and mentioned his marriage to David Furnish. This was the reason for a flurry of criticism and accusations of the company of LGBT propaganda from representatives of the ruling party (Georgian Dream), and later the Patriarchate of Georgia.
The company’s administration said in a statement that the book, which tells about Elton John, his successes and love for music, was published as part of the global Happy Meals Reader program. The company explains that this is a series of books about famous people of different professions who worked hard to become a legend.
Happy Meal Readers are published under license from Frances Lincoln Children’s books, international, with the same content for McDonald’s in all countries, printed in China, and under the terms of the license, their content or context cannot be changed, the company said in a Facebook statement.
McDonald’s recalled that the strength of people is in their diversity and sad when “propaganda uses the gender or orientation of people to discredit them, distorts the context and further oppresses the oppressed.”
The authors of the statement also apologized for the vagueness of the previous post.
Earlier, the company’s management apologized for the error, noting that the content of the brochure was directly copied without regard to context. This statement was later removed.
Representatives of the Georgian Dream party have recently been increasingly speaking out in their statements against what they call “LGBT propaganda”. Opponents accuse the authorities of manipulating the topic of the rights of sexual minorities in order to strengthen anti-Western sentiments in the country.
