The law allows for the nationalization of banks owned by sanctioned entrepreneurs. Now the NBU is obliged to start the procedure for the nationalization of the former Alfa-Bank.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on the withdrawal from the market of systematic banks with sanctioned owners. This was announced by Yaroslav Zheleznyak, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy.
The law will take effect one day after it is published.
“And then the NBU is obliged to start the procedure for the nationalization of a bank, that is, ex-Alfa,” the message said.
The law empowers the National Bank of Ukraine, under certain circumstances related to the application of sanctions against a bank or owners of a qualified holding in a bank, to make a decision to prohibit a sanctioned entity that acquires or increases a qualifying holding in a bank. .
It also introduced the possibility of withdrawing a systemically important bank from the market (nationalization) in the absence of signs of insolvency (when blocking sanctions are applied to the bank or the owner of a significant participation in it).
Recall that in April the Verkhovna Rada approved as a basis a bill allowing the nationalization of banks owned by sanctioned entrepreneurs.
Recall that in 2022, the United States imposed sanctions against the Alfa Bank, which is the largest private financial institution in Russia.
