Ukraine’s interest in the Australian aircraft represents the first public discussion of the F-18 fighter jet.
Ukraine has made a request to Australia about F-18 fighter jets. Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasily Miroshnichenko said this, AFP reports on Tuesday, June 13.
The Ukrainian diplomat noted that a preliminary inquiry had been made about the status of the 41 aircraft stored at an air base north of Sydney.
“There was a request for information. Ukraine is considering the possibilities of fighters, including this one,” Miroshnichenko said in a comment.
It was noted that Ukraine’s interest in the Australian aircraft was the first public discussion of the F-18.
Mick Ryan, a strategist and retired Australian major general, told the agency that the F-18 could help “level the playing field” against Russia’s stronger and better-equipped air force, which helps to prevent attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
“The main capabilities that the Ukrainians are looking for are longer-range sensors and longer-range weapons than the MiG-29 currently has. If they can level the playing field with the Russians in this regard, they will be able to push missile planes away from Ukraine, as well as retreat ground attack aircraft,” Ryan said.
Earlier, the media reported that Australia, the United States and Ukraine were discussing the possibility of transferring 41 F-18 Hornets of the Royal Australian Air Force to Kyiv.
