The Canadian government has ordered the arrest of a Russian An-124 cargo plane that was detained last year at the Toronto airport. This was announced on June 10 by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It noted that “the arrest of this important asset is the Canadian government’s first step under the asset seizure and confiscation regime, and is designed to put additional pressure on Russia” in relation to the situation around Ukraine.
This is the first physical asset seized by the Canadian government under the Special Economic Measures Act.
The department added that Ottawa will work with Kiev “on options for redistributing this asset to compensate victims of human rights violations, restore international peace and security, or restore Ukraine.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a visit to Ukraine announced that his country will transfer to Ukraine the cargo AN-124 belonging to the Russian Federation.
“Last spring, the Russian Antonov landed at Pearson Airport in Toronto. As soon as he landed, we immediately detained him. Now, thanks to the law, we will confiscate this aircraft, which belongs to Russia, and start the process of transferring ownership to Ukraine,” – quotes Canadian Prime Minister Suspilne.
Remember, on June 10, Trudeau visited Kyiv and announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth $500 million.
