The weakening of the Russian Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station led to ecocide. In addition, as a result of the dam burst, the settlements were flooded. Also, 30% of the natural reserve fund of the Kherson region is under water.
About 700 thousand people in Ukraine, both in the controlled and occupied territories of the Russian Federation, do not have proper access to drinking water due to the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said this in an interview with The Associated Press.
He pointed out that the explosion of the hydroelectric power plant has flooded important agricultural land, which will inevitably lead to a decrease in grain exports, an increase in global food prices and food shortages for millions in need. .
Griffiths noted that water also washed away land mines and now they pose a danger to many Ukrainians.
“It’s a cascade of problems, starting with allowing people to live today and then giving them some vision for tomorrow,” he said.
Griffiths added that the UN will make a special appeal to provide Ukraine with additional funds in connection with the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. At the same time, he said he wants to wait a few weeks to see the full impact on the economy, health and environment before asking for help.
As we have already written, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly criticized the UN and the Red Cross for their inaction in the face of a humanitarian disaster in recent days.
Zelensky said that the lack of help to the Ukrainians in the territories occupied by the Russians from international organizations after the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station is the self-destruction of these structures.
The UN responded to Zelensky’s outrage
