According to the published text of the accusation, Trump, among other things, kept documents in his residence in Florida with information about US nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of Washington and its allies in the event of an attack, a report from the Pentagon, intelligence and other intelligence agencies.
Boxes of classified documents were stored in Trump’s house without proper security and in fact in public access, including toilets, the report says. In addition, the text of the accusation states that Trump himself showed some documents during one of his interviews with reporters.
In total, the politician is charged with 37 counts, including 31 counts of deliberately concealing classified documents – one count for each such document, charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, and charges of lying under oath. Another six counts were brought against one of Trump’s aides, Walt Nauta.
In August 2022, Donald Trump’s Florida residence was raided. As a result, thousands of documents related to his work as president were confiscated from him and are the property of the state. Some seized papers were marked as secret, despite the fact that the politician’s representatives stated that all classified documents were returned to the government.
Trump became the first former US president to be indicted at the federal level. This comes as he competes for the Republican presidential nomination in the upcoming election. At the same time, even if Trump is found guilty and sent to prison, this will not deprive him of the right to run for President of the United States.
This is the second criminal case against Trump. In April, he was accused of falsifying business records. The trial will begin in March 2024.
