The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) considers it its urgent task to provide the inhabitants of Kherson and the surrounding region with clean drinking water after the destruction of the dam in Nova Kakhovka. This was announced by the organization’s press service yesterday.

“We are sending equipment such as pipes, water tanks, pumps and repair kits to Kherson and the affected areas, as well as emergency groceries and medical supplies,” the statement said.

In addition, ICRC experts assess the needs of local hospitals. In particular, a group of specialists in the field of health, mental health and water supply was sent to Novovorontsovka (Kherson region).

The Red Cross is also helping local communities cope with the new threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance created by floodwaters.

“This includes technical support for emergency services, as well as markers indicating that the area is mined,” the organization said.

The ICRC emphasizes its readiness to respond from both sides of the river, particularly from its operating bases in Odessa and Donetsk, and reaffirms its offer of emergency assistance to the authorities for people affected by the floods , as well as long-term help to improve access to clean water.

“We continue to offer our support and ask for critical aid to be delivered to areas where we do not have the necessary authorization to operate,” the Red Cross said.

It will be remembered that in recent days, President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized international organizations for their slow response to the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. In particular, he said that there is no Red Cross in the Kherson region.

After such statements of the head of state, the Ukrainian Red Cross reacted.
