A billion counterfeit dollars were meant to be sent to Africa. A total of 10 million $100 bills were seized.
In Istanbul, law enforcement seized the largest batch of counterfeit banknotes in Turkish history worth a billion dollars. They are intended for export to African countries, TRT television channel reported on Friday, citing the country’s Interior Ministry.
It was noted that in a warehouse in one of the districts of Istanbul, where fake dollars were stored, 10 million $100 bills were seized. Six people are in custody in the case, including five foreigners, including three Swedes, a Briton and a Ghanaian citizen.
Searches were conducted in villas where foreigners lived, where large sums of money and jewelery were seized. The diplomatic missions of the countries of which the detainees are citizens have been informed of the investigation being conducted against them.
Earlier, the National Bank reported that in 2022 the number of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes decreased by more than three times compared to 2021.
