This is not the full fledged free trade deal between the two countries that the Conservative Party promised in its election manifesto ahead of the 2019 general election.
However, Biden and Sunak agreed on a plan of action for a new partnership, the details of which Downing Street has already shared with the BBC. This plan, in particular, includes the following important points:
- Reducing the vulnerability of supply chains in the field of vital technologies;
- Support for clean energy sources with a long-term goal of zero emissions, including a new civil nuclear technology partnership;
- the creation of a new “Information Bridge” between the US and the UK to facilitate the exchange of data between 55 thousand British companies and certified US organizations “without unnecessary bureaucracy”;
- Holding an International Summit on the Safe Application of Artificial Intelligence in the UK this year to step up international efforts to manage and control new artificial intelligence technologies;
- Expanding cooperation to prevent “hostile countries” from developing and using technologies that could harm America or Britain;
-
Increasing research and collaboration to ensure US and UK leadership in key future technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G and 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors and bioengineering.
In addition, Biden and Sunak announced joint assistance to Ukraine.
For the first time in half a century, we are seeing war on the European continent and, as before, the US and UK have come together to support Ukraine, upholding the values of democracy and freedom, to do everything so that they win. And I know we will do it,” Prime Minister Sunak said.
The President of the United States added:
Together we provide economic, humanitarian and security assistance to Ukraine in its fight against a brutal invasion from Russia.
