Today an EU member is Cyprus, 37% of which the territory is currently occupied, recalled Matti Maasikas.
The temporary occupation of Russian troops on part of Ukraine’s territory should not prevent Ukraine from joining the European Union. This was stated by the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas in an interview on Channel 24, published on Friday, May 27.

“At this time, no one can give a 100% guarantee that it can interfere. However, for me there are some key questions. From the perspective of the EU, whether some part of the country wants to join the European Union is under work, then it really engages process and a third party can say it “no”. But the decision, again, was made by the EU, therefore, in my opinion, this fact should not interfere, ” said Maasikas.
He recalled that Cyprus is now an EU member, 37% of which the territory is currently occupied. And this fact, he stressed, in no way affected the process of Cyprus ’entry into the EU.
Earlier the media reported that Russia occupied almost 21% of Ukraine’s territory. Since the beginning of the invasion of Russian troops on February 24, the area of occupied territories of Ukraine has almost tripled.
Russia changed its position on Ukraine’s entry into the EU
