Membership in the European Union requires a lot of work, said Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin. At the same time, he is not opposed to Kyiv receiving the status of a candidate.
Finland does not support giving Ukraine special conditions for joining the European Union, but considers it important to give Kyiv “hope for membership.” This is what Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in an interview with Yle.
“Another big discussion we have in advance is the application of Ukraine for EU membership. I think it is very important to give Ukraine hope: clear steps on how the country will become a future EU members, ”he said.
Marin stressed that he was against Ukraine’s accelerated path to membership in the European Union.
“I do not see how we can make exceptions, in the sense that the standard must be met. I am open to Ukraine to be a candidate country. Getting the status of a candidate country does not mean that tomorrow will be this member of the EU. Of course, membership needs a lot of work, “he said.
Earlier, French Minister for European Affairs Clement Bon said that the process of Ukraine’s entry into the EU could take 15 or 20 years.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that Kyiv insisted on granting the status of a candidate for the European Union in June and it understands that this does not mean immediate membership.
