Disputes even before noticeable successes at the front were started by Wagner’s private military company, the Sparta battalion, as well as the operational-tactical combat formations of Kaskad and Rusich. Discussions about the influence of various units on the local advances of the invaders in the area of Maryinka and Bakhmut coincide with reports of the arrival of Chechen formations in Ukraine. This is stated in a new report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Supporting discussions about the units’ role in minor advances is likely aimed at undermining the ability of Chechen head Ramzan Kadirov to use any next tactical successes to boost his profile, analysts say. It will also prevent the Kadyr from reusing his paramilitaries as the main irregular offensive force.
The ISW report says that many PIKs and militias may be outraged by Kadyrov’s attempt to take credit for any success after months of attrition offensives.
Recall that the founder of the Russian PIK “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin publicly criticized the regime of dictator Vladimir Putin, complaining about the Russian bureaucratic machine. The ISW believes that this may be due to the insult that he did not receive the reward promised by the Kremlin for the alleged “capture” of Bakhmut.
