The President discussed with the leaders of the Balkan countries the implementation of the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a joint meeting with Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovachevsky during his visit to Moldova for the second summit of the European Political Community. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian leader on Thursday, June 1.
Zelensky thanked the leaders of the Balkan countries for their comprehensive support for Ukraine and help in the fight against Russian aggression, as well as in the implementation of the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of our state.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid special attention to the expected results of the NATO summit in Vilnius. He noted the need for the member countries of the Alliance to determine a clear algorithm for Ukraine’s movement towards NATO membership.
“Concrete decisions regarding Ukraine’s further movement towards membership and security of our country for the period before joining the Alliance are what will allow us to consider the Vilnius summit a success,” the President stressed.
He informed the prime ministers about the active work of Ukraine on the path to EU membership and noted the progress in the implementation of the seven recommendations of the European Commission, which should allow the start of negotiations on the accession of the EU to this year.
Volodymyr Zelensky highly appreciated the accession of the Balkan countries to all packages of EU sanctions against Russia and expressed hope for the continuation of such coordinated sanctions policy.
The head of state expressed hope for the active participation of Albania and North Macedonia in the implementation of the Ukrainian peace formula as a single peace plan capable of ensuring a just and stable peace in Ukraine and Europe.
The President spoke of the need to consolidate international efforts to bring Russia to justice for crimes committed in Ukraine. He thanked the Prime Minister of North Macedonia for joining his country in the Core Group for the establishment of a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against our country. The hope was also expressed that Albania would join this important work.
Earlier, Zelensky named two parts of Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia. A decision is needed on the full protection of Ukraine from Russian attacks on the ground and in the air, the President said.
